Why I Love This Photo - No.6

This week's 'Why I Love This Photo' is very different to last week's, ie much calmer. Last week was all about steep off piste powder skiing which can be very dramatic and appeals to certain types, expert skiers, any alpha males, and especially to those who like to 'talk' about skiing in the bar. Today let's take a relaxing deep breath and revel in some green piste action.

But this isn't any old green piste you see here in the photo. This green piste, Ladies and Gentlemen, is the Alitport as us Brits call it, or the 'Blanchot' to others. The Altiport is an absolute beauty of a piste, we are so spoilt in Méribel to have it. Firstly because it is perfect for beginner skiers to build their confidence and technique, it's more than likely the first ever piste people will progress to after a nursery slope. Secondly, it offers gorgeous views down the valley, I for one am still mesmorised by it even after so many years of teaching in Méribel.

So why do I love this photo? Look at the snow and weather conditions, aren't they perfect? A skier's dream. To be honest this photo just about sums up how amazing the snow conditions were all of last winter. This was taken in December, the week before Christmas. I was teaching the Patel family, and within a couple of days Master Patel was ready for his first piste after showing good skills on the nursery slope. With perfect snow, stunning views and a very happy chap for company (here he is in the foreground), the day of work in the office was rather splended yet again. I personally can't wait for more days like this very soon.

I spoke to a good friend of mine yesterday, Slippers Jackson also a ski instructor, who lives in the Alps all year round. He said that there have been regular storms recently, which has resulted in good snow falls up in the high mountains. It's too early yet to tell how good the snow conditions will be when the ski resorts open, but these very early signs are promising.
