“Ski teaching is a dream turned into reality”

I first skied at the age of 28 while on holiday with my girlfriend in Soldeu, Andorra. As she could already ski, I took skiing lessons to help me improve. Whilst on this skiing holiday I fell in love with the sport, the scenery and the fact that everyone around me was constantly smiling. I then started to plot how I could spend more time in the mountains during the winter.

Over the course of the next few years I enjoyed many more skiing holidays, always taking lessons which enabled me to progress efficiently to an expert level. During these holidays, I paid particular attention to the quality of the lessons which was purely down to the professionalism of the ski instructor. As I taught music to a high level, I was intrigued by how my ski instructors adapted their teaching styles and lessons for the mountainous environments. A seed had been sown: I started to dream about a new exciting career.

The dream soon turned into reality when I enrolled for my first of many BASI (British Association of Snowsport Instructors) courses. The highest of all the qualification levels is a long and arduous process, where many aspirants fall at the countless hurdles. Fuelled by my passion for teaching, I gained the highest and most respected qualification in ski instructing, BASI ISTD Level 4 with full French equivalence. I am now based in Méribel in the middle of the biggest ski area in the world, The Three Valleys. I also regularly teach over in the Courchevel Valley (also part of The Three Valleys). Previous to this I taught in St. Anton in Austria and Courmayeur in Italy.

During the summer months I live in London, but as a professional musician my work takes me around the world and I am fortunate enough to have performed in many of the world’s top concert halls. My hobbies include going to the opera, visiting museums and art galleries. I am interested in wine, fine dining and I enjoy cooking at home. In the summer I keep fit with running, long distance walking and playing squash.

“My passion for ski teaching is infectious.”

I first put on skis at the age of 18. I was at a dry slope, at the Bowles Outdoor Centre in Tonbridge before my first-ever skiing holiday in Bulgaria. I soon realised how much fun could be had on skis. For many years of precious holiday time, I travelled the world every winter, searching for the snow and the mountains to satisfy my love of the sport. In Spring-time I was often found to be sulking for weeks after my last skiing trip each winter.

This was all rectified when I handed in my notice at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture), sold my house in West Sussex and embarked upon the long and challenging journey to become qualified as a ski instructor. I now hold the highest instructing qualification available, BASI ISTD Level 4, and have gained full French equivalence. The Three Valleys ski area was one of my favourites as a holiday maker, so it is no surprise that I have based myself there. I taught in Courchevel for three winters, but am equally as happy teaching in Méribel where I have now spent more than seven winters. I also met my wife Harriet in Méribel, which makes it even more of a special place to me.

I'm told that my love and passion for ski teaching, and for being in the mountains, is infectious. I love meeting new clients each winter but also welcoming back many regular clients who can’t wait to get their annual quota of skiing in the mountains with me. I am genuinely happy and proud to teach people of all levels and see their confidence grow. When out skiing myself, I'm always accompanied by my camera so that I can regularly update the MH2ski blog.

During the summer months I live in Leamington Spa in Warwickshire. After many years working as a driving instructor, I have recently launched into a new summer career as a professional photographer, specialising in weddings and portraits. My hobbies include running, mountain biking and hill walking. One thing never changes though, I still sulk at the end of each winter.

March Snow Conditions In Meribel

One of the many advantages of being a Ski Instructor based in Meribel, is being up the mountain pretty much every day. This means accurate first hand knowledge of snow conditions. Granted, webcams provide reliable images, and of course there other sources of information. However I thought I'd share with you my thoughts on the current snow conditions.
