Meribel's 80th Ski Season Has Now Finished

Posted on
April 23, 2018

Wowzers, Méribel's ski lifts have closed for the winter. And what an incredible 80th ski season she provided us. Granted the snow conditions certainly played their part, but boy oh boy what a winter. It all started for me way back in November, just over the ridge from Méribel, in Val Thorens. Back then I was as giddy as anything to put my skis on again, and was blown away by the views and the thrill of the sport. Mind you, the first few days I wasn't impressed with my skiing performance, something wasn't quite right with my right pole plant. A mental note was made!

The peak of Saulire and the Dent de Burgin, bottom left, are dwarfed by the mighty Mont Blanc massif in the distance.

The season started, with brilliant snow conditions. The popular Festive period came and went with continued high quality snow, although the weather at times was challenging.

After a couple of squiffy moments earlier in the winter, I was back on skis again mid January, and returned to teaching. What a treat it all became yet again. With a heightened appreciation of the environment, and how lucky I was to share lovely moments with many people.

One of the many pleasures of being a ski instructor is being able to share wonderful times with friends and clients, old and new. Also having the opportunity to try and enhance their enjoyment, and fingers crossed help improve their skiing performance at the same time. Whoever thought about this scenario originally is an absolute genius.

The last two weeks have been valuable in terms of rest and recovery, and then play time. With the popular holiday period well behind us, numbers of skiers on the mountain dwindled rapidly. The snow conditions have stayed excellent, even with the recent heat. Skiing has been an absolute pleasure to say the least. All of these photos have been taken in the last week by the way.

A big 'thank you' to all of you that have helped make this season so special. I certainly have loads of positive memories, I hope you do as well. Mind you, my last day on skis yesterday reminded me about something from way back in November. I really must figure out what is going on with my right pole plant. I nearly tripped over my skis twice. Can't have that. Oh well, there's always next winter.

Oh, do come back in a couple of weeks because.......I've also been back into the Vanoise National Park recently, with my mate called Canon, bumping into some Bouquetins.

Martin.

Early Winter Snow Conditions - First Hand Experience

Hi everybody, and welcome to the first blog post of the 2018/19 winter, direct from Méribel. All went well with the big drive down from the UK to the Alps. Since then I've been gradually settling in, and have so far managed five days of skiing in Tignes, Val Thorens and Val d'Isere. So what are the all important snow conditions?
