Summer Reset - Part One

Hi everyone, and welcome to my first blog post of the summer from Méribel. During my previous post (click here for the link if you missed it), I spoke about the need for a summer reset, and I can't think of a better place than Méribel to provide this. Yes, it's a premium ski resort, it's also a popular summer destination. Some regular readers of my blogs will know that I love to return and enjoy the mountains at any time of the year. So what can Méribel offer visitors?

Meet Herbie, my new steed.
Traversing across the red piste called 'Mauduit', just below the Folie Douce mountain restaurant, with a snow cannon and the Saulire Express ski lift in the foreground.

The quick answer is, loads; hiking, summer ski lifts, outdoor sports, horse riding, climbing, tennis, mountain biking, road cycling, e-biking, fishing, golf and paragliding amongst other activities. Some people think that ski resorts can be ugly in the summer, however, I beg to differ. And I'd like to show you how amazing the mountains are during this season. And no I don't work for the Méribel Tourist Office, I just love being in the alps. By the way, living at high altitude is quite welcome during these heatwaves, the temps freshen up amazingly during the evening and night.

For one reason or another, I haven't been able to mountain bike in Méribel the last few summers. However I've dived back into it in 2022, and am absolutely loving the buzz and feeling of wellbeing at altitude.

More épilobe purple flowers, with the Grand Lac mountain restaurant in the foreground, above St.Martin.
The Tougnete ridge, just across from the Tougnete 2 chair lift.
Looking down on the Choucas blue piste, and the top of the Cherferie chair lift.

There are similarities between biking and skiing. Both sports use ski lifts to gain altitude, we appreciate the scenery, enjoy the weather, and then of course the thrill of riding down the mountain. There are dedicated mountain bike trails, which keeps the mountain safe, and bikers and hikers separate. Sometimes the trails are routed across ski pistes, but mostly they take their own way down the mountain.

This summer, I plan to post every three or four days, and hope to inspire you with the majesty of the Méribel Valley and the surrounding area. Activities that I'll be taking part with will include more mountain biking, road cycling, hiking and loads of photography including my favourite time of the day to shoot - sunset. With the summer heat we are experiencing at the moment, the sunsets are amazing......... captured a couple of evenings ago.

Saulire, on fire during twilight, a fleeting spectacle.

I hope you are all having a great summer, and good luck with coping with the latest heatwave. Right, I better grab my camera bag and head up the mountain again. See you in a few days time. Live. With. Passion. Martin.
