The Countdown

Hi everybody, and welcome to another post from 2020. As mentioned a month ago in the previous article, I wasn't sure what my plans were in terms of being where and when. This has been due to a number of things rumbling on in the background, not to mention the pandemic and Brexit! However over the last few days (and hours with the introduction of the tier 4 group) a plan has taken shape; I shall be in the UK for Christmas for the first time in 23 years. And my goodness everyone, what a performance Christmas is these days, I'm convinced I don't remember it being like this 23 years ago.

Meet 'Marty' the Merry Moose!

Celebrating with Christmas decorations appears to be an Olympic sport now. In many areas some of the light displays outside people's homes, and decorated Christmas trees in their front windows, are pretty impressive; it's definitely at a different level since I was last here. Not to forget that I'm experiencing a very much dumbed-down version this year due to the second lockdown and tier structures? It's been interesting to experience this compared to being in resort. So what are my plans?

In short I shall leave the UK on Sunday Dec 27th, arriving in Méribel the following day.

Looking forward to waking up each morning, to admire this view from the kitchen window.

What is the situation in the French Alps? Méribel is one of the resorts that have opened their doors this weekend to visitors. Various activities are allowed, however the ski lifts remain closed for alpine skiing. The French Government has dangled a carrot to us skiers and snowboarders by saying that the ski lifts might be able to open from January 7th if various conditions are met due to the pandemic. Not sure if one of the conditions being met makes an allowance for the fact that the President has tested positive in recent days? I'm trying to not speculate too much as to whether the Jan 7th lift opening will happen; as always, time will tell! What I do know is that I will be able to go skinning (ski touring) and walk up the mountain, breathe in the fresh air, and admire the views before sliding back down to resort. Bliss.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas whatever you are doing, and whoever you are able to spend time with. I'll be back in touch soon, next time direct from the alps. The 2020 sign off continues....... Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, and Stay Fabulous. Martin.
